On October 7, 1989, Pastor Pozie L. Redmond’s vision of a world, community and church unified by a love for Jesus Christ took root. As the New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church’s first worship service took place at Alphonso Dawson Funeral Home, the 24 members in attendance would soon realize that they were a part of history. In just five months, on March 4, 1990, New Calvary was able to acquire a church located at 823 Dill Avenue in Atlanta. The relocation to its Dill Avenue location allowed New Calvary to establish several ministries while accomplishing its primary mission of bringing souls to Christ. The congregation grew exponentially over the next 13 years; compelling New Calvary to seek a new church that would support continued growth in ministries and membership.
On July 16, 2002, Pastor Redmond and the leadership of New Calvary began the search for a new church. Guided by prayer, and, driven by the objective of remaining in the Perkerson Community, nine months later, New Calvary moved to its new location at 1690 Melrose Drive. On May 11, 2003, New Calvary held its first service at its new house of worship.
With a membership of more than 2000 and adequate space to house its growth, New Calvary has experienced unprecedented expansion of its ministries. Infrastructural improvements have led to the enhancement of our Christian Education efforts such as Living In Victory (Sunday School) and the Southwest Institute of Biblical Studies – a three-year certificate program designed to equip both leadership and laity with the tools to boldly proclaim the God’s truths. Additionally, more space is available to support New Calvary’s Youth, Seniors and Literacy ministries just to name a few.
Over the years, New Calvary has adopted several themes and campaigns to provide inspiration and motivation to the church and community. “Maximizing Our Potential”, “Building Our House”, and “Yes, We Can, Through Christ” are just a few of the themes that have been used to serve as reminders of what can be accomplished through faith in Christ. The “Talk About God” (T.A.G.) campaign has remained a staple in New Calvary’s evangelistic repertoire since 2007.
Pastor Redmond fervently encouraged talking about God and the saving power of the shed blood of Jesus Christ through personal testimony. Pastor Redmond transitioned to his eternal home to be with the Lord on March 24, 2022.
In December 2022, God turned the page on our introductory chapter. The church’s new season began under the leadership of Pastor Le’Zaire Reese. We are excited about what God has planned for us!
New Calvary looks back with thanksgiving for God’s grace, and, yet, we look ahead with confident assurance that as we continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, He is with us every step of the way.
